How a takedown works
When a creator's content shows up on a site they never posted it to, the copyright is still theirs. A DMCA takedown notice tells the company hosting that site that the content is used without permission and asks for it to be removed.
A complete notice names the original work, lists the exact pages where the copies are, and says who owns the rights. Search engines take their own notices too, which takes the pages out of search results even when a site ignores the first one.
Some sites never answer. For those the notice goes to the company that hosts the site, or to the search engines, so the copy becomes much harder to find.
Prevention helps as well. A watermark on each piece makes a leak easy to trace back and less worth sharing.
Speed matters most in the first days after a leak, when a copy spreads from one site to the next. Removing the first copies quickly keeps the leak small. Older leaks can still be taken down, they just take longer because there are more copies to find and more sites to write to.
